From the Apple PR department:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

Yipes! That might be why I’m being asked by international consumers to sell my iPad. If only I could be guaranteed that no one will try to pull one over on me (it wouldn’t be the first time someone scammed me from an eBay auction), but now I only ship domestically, with verified accounts, and insurance, and delivery notice, and gps tracking… okay, maybe not GPS tracking.

Anyway, I’ve got my iPad up for auction so I can get the 3G version when it drops. I can’t imagine the number of people waiting for that one if they’ve sold more than 500,000 units since the launch. All the while, the iTunes App Store developers are basically reselling ovesized versions of the very same application they have on the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms. Pretty frustrating for a fan.

I think the whole Apple/Adobe issue really is just about protecting ones place in the grand scheme of things. Adobe saying that it is a slap to developers is just a way of using a third party to influence someone. Really, if Flash were to die off because Developers find a different way of developing, Adobe would be hit in the pocketbook. But the Internet and technology would continue on.

If Adobe really were looking out for the developers, they would freeware Adobe Flash CS4 [no wait, 5 now] instead of charging year over year for an upgrade that may or may not have something useful for all. I know that I’ve never used my installation of the Flash application from CS4. But I’m not a Flash developer. Meh, I had to get that package because Adobe didn’t tie all of the tools I wanted into a specific package except for the $2500 Master Collection of which I’d have to pay another $900 to upgrade to CS5 from CS4 after I upgrade from CS3 to 4 because they wouldn’t give me a cross-grade license when I switched to Apple.

Frankly, both are just trying to protect their developments, and bank accounts. Apple however is stating it pretty plainly; use of third party tools are obviously degrading the end product to the point where someone noticed. For the most part, Apple development tools are free. Publishing is a relatively paltry sum of $100 and you can submit as much as you like. On the other hand, purchasing Adobe products seems to be ever pricey at $700 for Flash CS5 Professional which is separate from Flash Catalyst at $400.

Can’t we all just get along?

When you spend $500+ on a device and you can’t get online, you should take it back, not complain that the entire sector and manufacturer is crap and you hate them with a red hot passion. Just get over it. Look at quality control percentages and the idea of Six Sigma. Out of 300,000 apparently sold on the first weekend, you are bound to find a few hundred that didn’t get caught in the sampling check. Devices would cost infinitely more if everything was check 100% by a human. These aren’t Italian hand made cars here folks, it is a $500 to $830 gadget you can return for a fully working device.

As someone who is in the process of launching 100 sites in one year, I understand the need to turn a profit. But this is crazy. You know that little + symbol that you see when surfing the iTunes app store? It means the application is good for both the iPhone platform and the ipad platform. But I am finding applications that have that symbol, and the iPhone/iPod touch version still in existence as a separate purchase. Then to punch you a little harder, the iPad version is twice as much as the iPhone version. So you have to purchase the new version, but you can use it on your iPad and iPhone…. But they didn’t just upgrade the old version to work on both. No. They say they optimized the code for the iPad and it just happens to work with the iPhone. Then there are other applications that just added larger graphics and relaunched the application at an additional price. Leaving the other application to languish. It is pretty off-putting. Why would I want to purchase from these people? The obviously think little of their customers. Sort of like announcing your app is advertisement free and then at a later date, “updating” the app so it has advertisements. Just not as sneaky, but still a land grab.

What do you think? If you stumble upon my blogs and projects, make a comment and tell a friend. I don’t advertise so I don’t have much traffic. I suppose I could Twitter everything I type and some would see it in the stream. Thanks for stopping by.

Edit: Engadget is talking about it too.

That is pretty much the only response from Apple. I know that my iPad 64GB WiFi does not charge through the keyboard. But it does Sync. Apparently it needs 10W, which is fine. I’ll need a longer cable that can power it too. While walking around Alexandria, VA today; I had several people ask me about it. They are all going to get one. I talked them into getting a 3G. Which may or may not make Apple happy. I’m going to be selling my 64GB WiFi when the 3G’s drop because it doesn’t make sense to have WiFi and NEVER be able to get online in remote locations that get a 3G signal. I would love the iPad to tether to the iPhone 4G when it arrives. I’m now moving A LOT of data from my Mac to my iPad and will post my experiences. So far, it’s going pretty well… except for the power draw not being enough through my Mac Keyboard. Since I have a ton of external USB HD’s there aren’t any available ports. Argh.

Come to me App Store, Book Store, and iTunes… I’m all over it like a lion on a baby zebra.

I think developers are a little drunk on profit taking. Apps are coming in at $10? Give me a break. I read somewhere, not sure where, but some reporter was being an apologist for developers charging more for the iPad applications because there is greater risk. She even said that developers for the iPhone knew what they were getting at the time. A phone that would change the industry. Right. No one knew anything about the iPhone ability to be converted into success. As a fact, AT&T only took the risk because of the deal they were given on exclusivity. I’ll have to find the article. Whoever it is, I think, is nuts.

The iPad is exactly like the iPhone, the risk is the same. With iPhone OS 4.0 apparently being able to multitask with an Expose type of interface to purge running apps, the iPad will take over the laptop market. People really don’t want to have all this power in a 4-5lb device anymore. The iPhone has too small of a screen, and the desktop isn’t mobile, and the laptop has a limited battery to weight to easy consumption ratio.

Anyway… tl;dr?

There is going to be a revolt when people see iPad App pricing unless they start changing their tune, and some people are nuts with their technology claims; perhaps including me.

Engadget has a posting, basically, the discovery of Apple Battery Replacement Policy as it relates to the iPad. In a nutshell, if you have an iPad with a dud of a battery, and it won’t hold a charge. Call Apple, they’ll ship you a new iPad for $100. Done, and Done. And frankly, I don’t get how people are going from unit replacement to “they are replacing my $800 device which apparently costs $100.” Now, I understand that some people are business challenged, but this makes no logical sense. They aren’t sending you a new unit and you get to keep the one you have. They are swapping one unit for another, and in all cases, unless the unit has been crushed; they will recertify the parts and perform cost recovery. I’m sure some people will take advantage of that by treating their units like garbage and then expecting a clean exchange. Other people are already complaining that “what if I’ve customized it?” Now, that last one is a good question. I’d like that one answered because I put ZAGG skins on my devices so they don’t get munched by keys, or a bit of dirt on a table and someone decides to slide it one way or another. I’d have to pull that skin off which isn’t an easy thing to do without some misshapen mass ending up in a blob on my desk. Plus, my Green Lantern sticker will look really cool on an iPad.

Here is the battery return policy on the Apple website.

I’m sorry, but there is absolutely no stolen IP here. It sure sounds and looks like a publicity stunt for a company that isn’t going to go far in the US market. You see, they are threatening to sue Apple, but lets compare products to see why I called the P88 Tablet the “Fat Bastard” of the iPad. Here is a visual representation:

So, what is the P88? Here are some specs compared to the Apple iPad. The P88 uses an Intel Atom 1.6GHz apparently, while the iPad uses a custom designed 1GHz Apple A4 system on a chip. The P88 requires conventional RAM starting at 1GB and no word as to what is goes up to. I don’t think anyone will care. The P88 is supposed to weigh in at 1.03kg which is a lot more than the .73kg for the iPad that is decked out. When it comes to storage, you have a battery sucking 160GB HDD in the P88 and not the 16, 32, or 64 gigs of Flash the iPad has. Then the screen; the P88 has a 10.2 inch screen while the iPad has a 9.7 incher. Connections on the P88? A lot for a “slate” with 3 USB ports, VGA, LAN, Microphone and Headphone ports, Card Reader, and the charging plug. The iPad has the headphone jack and a thirty-pin connector for myriad functions. Now here is the kicker, the battery life is 1.5 hours on the P88 and 10 hours on the iPad.

The thing is about 3 times as thick as the iPad, and short of the chrome surround, it is nothing like the iPad. I enjoy a good troll feeding every once in awhile, but this is just crazy. Someone thought that laughter was good marketing for their company.

GizChina has a post about it, The Register does too, CrunchGear picked it up, as did Shangaiist. As Shangaiist put it, the clone arrived 3 months before the iPad did. Which is great, if it weren’t for the painfully run-of-the-mill materials that make up the device features. I could probably build one of these out of anything I have in the office right now. I think I might have a Mac Mini I could convert into a tablet and it will have the same thickness.
