I can’t tell you how many frustrated moments I’ve had with the 6 different tablets I’ve owned.

If you want to compete in the Tablet PC market and take share away from everyone, including the iPad… get a flat sheet of glass with a laminated digitizer like the iPhone and iPad have. Run a full OS on the hardware, and get 8 hours out of it under some reasonable load [like movies]. Get a movie or two, plus 4 hours of “goof off” time and you will have a device that takes over.

If you can get it under 2 pounds, have a front and rear facing camera and USB/MicroSD support… you are going to take over if you keep the price below $800 too. It doesn’t have to be all that fast. Just look at the A4, its only a 1Ghz processor. Just let me run all of my x86 software and I’ll buy it.

An interesting Wall Street Journal article popped up on the third, but I haven’t been updating every site I run as often as I should. If you are a writer and interested in submitting articles, let me know.

The WSJ article is titled “Dark Side Arises for Phone Apps” with a subhead of “Security Concerns Prompt Warnings” and frankly, has the most hyperbolic title you could give in relation to software written for the mobile platform. Why? Because instead of saying “Dark Side Arises for Google App Store” it says Phone Apps which belies the fact the article states later on that Apple and RIM both are proactive in preventing undesirable applications from being distributed on the respective platforms. No, it says the all encompassing “PHONE” apps. And it isn’t true. There has never been a security concern for Apple apps. It takes an army to solve the Google Software Store problems, which is why they leave it up to the users to find issues.

Unlike Apple or BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., Google doesn’t have employees dedicated to vetting applications submitted to its Android store. Google said it removes apps that violate its policies, but largely relies on users to alert it to bad software. “We check reactively,” said a Google spokesman. “There is no manual bottleneck.”

The article goes on to discuss a year old exploit that was patched in a matter of days and was a weakness in the SMS protocol interpretation, not just the iPhone. Another FUD attempt. I’m not one to believe that a system is perfect. My standard saying is that “as soon as humans are perfect, so will be their creations.” We’re far from perfect and our creations are even further from perfect; see BP’s Deepwater Horizon, who’s name couldn’t be truer words. The article is just stupid because the only weakness it found in reference to Apple was a protocol outside of the App Store. Oh, wasn’t the “App Store” created by Apple? No one else has an App Store, when people think App Store, they think Apple. Stop using it for everyone else.

But, I guess anti-Apple users will find solace in this article, Apple fans will read it in frustration, and clicks will generate income and job security for the author. Here is a cookie “Spencer E. Ante.” Hyperbole 1: Common Sense 0.

You know what doesn’t matter to me?

Tech leaks. Why? Because a tech company like Apple is always developing something. What does it matter to a consumer that Gizmodo got a hold of it. The only real interest story should be involving any industrial espionage that takes place. If Gizmodo traded data to a competitor, or gave the device to a competitor, I’d say slam the door and leave them locked up.

Any crime they committed should be punished all the same. The problem is that the public has a perception of Apple being a huge megacorporation, and Gizmodo/Gawker being a tiny little blog. I hate that they use the term blog as their structure. They aren’t. They are apparently a $300 million corporation with checkbook journalism as their ethical compass. Treat them as such. The DA will pursue this. Apple can sit back and let them be put in jail and keep their name clean.

But really, who isn’t surprised that Apple has another device in the channel. It isn’t like it was a well kept secret that they make phones, computers, and tablets. Oh wait.. iPads.

I’ll sum up what was in the iPhone prototype:

Battery, check. [which they couldn't glean any data from]

Screen, check. [which everyone in the bar saw]

Transceiver, check. [which they never saw]

Memory, check [which they never saw]

Processor, check [which they never saw]

Case, check [which everyone in the bar saw]

What is up next for Gizmodo/Gawker leadership? Perhaps a court room, prison bars, fines. Who knows.

.

Perhaps it is the circles I run in. I don’t know. I read about 200 periodicals [online and offline] each day, and I hear more about applications being rejected than people who are falsely incarcerated, or people who have been harmed irreparably by accusation. It isn’t like the people who are denied for one reason or another can’t resubmit and potentially land on another reviewer who didn’t fall out of the idiot tree. These are applications, on one platform. But the hub bub about a political satirist being denied because of his ridicule of political figures pales in comparison to people who have been falsely imprisoned.

Can we put this in perspective?

Take “The Innocence Project” an organization that attempts to right the wrongs of the falsely imprisoned. Their About Page says the following:

“The Innocence Project (“IP”) was established in 1992 at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law by civil rights attorneys Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld and is dedicated to exonerating the innocent through post-conviction DNA testing. Since its inception, more than 240 people in the United States have been exonerated, including 17 who were at one time sentenced to death. In many of these DNA exonerations, the Innocence Project either was the attorney of record or consulted with the defendant’s attorneys.
I know this is a technology based blog, but at some point, you really have to step back and look at the bigger picture. 17 people were sentenced to death based on bad data.

Lets lighten up about applications being denied there is a lot worse happening in the world and… you aren’t sentenced to death.

From the Apple PR department:

Although we have delivered more than 500,000 iPads during its first week, demand is far higher than we predicted and will likely continue to exceed our supply over the next several weeks as more people see and touch an iPad™. We have also taken a large number of pre-orders for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April.

Faced with this surprisingly strong US demand, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the international launch of iPad by one month, until the end of May. We will announce international pricing and begin taking online pre-orders on Monday, May 10. We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.

Yipes! That might be why I’m being asked by international consumers to sell my iPad. If only I could be guaranteed that no one will try to pull one over on me (it wouldn’t be the first time someone scammed me from an eBay auction), but now I only ship domestically, with verified accounts, and insurance, and delivery notice, and gps tracking… okay, maybe not GPS tracking.

Anyway, I’ve got my iPad up for auction so I can get the 3G version when it drops. I can’t imagine the number of people waiting for that one if they’ve sold more than 500,000 units since the launch. All the while, the iTunes App Store developers are basically reselling ovesized versions of the very same application they have on the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms. Pretty frustrating for a fan.

I think the whole Apple/Adobe issue really is just about protecting ones place in the grand scheme of things. Adobe saying that it is a slap to developers is just a way of using a third party to influence someone. Really, if Flash were to die off because Developers find a different way of developing, Adobe would be hit in the pocketbook. But the Internet and technology would continue on.

If Adobe really were looking out for the developers, they would freeware Adobe Flash CS4 [no wait, 5 now] instead of charging year over year for an upgrade that may or may not have something useful for all. I know that I’ve never used my installation of the Flash application from CS4. But I’m not a Flash developer. Meh, I had to get that package because Adobe didn’t tie all of the tools I wanted into a specific package except for the $2500 Master Collection of which I’d have to pay another $900 to upgrade to CS5 from CS4 after I upgrade from CS3 to 4 because they wouldn’t give me a cross-grade license when I switched to Apple.

Frankly, both are just trying to protect their developments, and bank accounts. Apple however is stating it pretty plainly; use of third party tools are obviously degrading the end product to the point where someone noticed. For the most part, Apple development tools are free. Publishing is a relatively paltry sum of $100 and you can submit as much as you like. On the other hand, purchasing Adobe products seems to be ever pricey at $700 for Flash CS5 Professional which is separate from Flash Catalyst at $400.

Can’t we all just get along?
